Through-hole drill bits for CNC machining centres – clean through bores from side to side
Through-hole drill bits are specially designed for producing complete through bores in wood and wood-based materials. Unlike dowel drill bits, which create blind holes, through-hole drill bits bore right through the workpiece – precisely, with minimal tear-out and without reworking.
In the Glade CNC Technik shop you will find through-hole drill bits from Leitz and ITA Tools – in the common diameters of 5 mm and 10 mm, overall length 70 mm, right-hand/left-hand rotation, in Standard and Excellent versions made of carbide (HW/VHW).
Compatible with the main CNC machines: Our through-hole drill bits fit through-feed drilling units and machining centres from leading manufacturers – including Homag, Weeke, Biesse, AES, SCM/Morbidelli, Felder, IMA and Masterwood.
Select the right through-hole drill bit – what should you look for?
When selecting the right through-hole drill bit, three parameters are crucial: diameter, rotation direction and design.
- Diameter: The most common sizes are 5 mm for fine joints and 10 mm for larger through-holes, e.g. for fittings or cable routing.
- Rotation direction: As with the dowel drill bit, the rule is: right-hand rotation drill bits for the left spindle, left-hand rotation for the right. Incorrect assignment leads to tear-out and increased tool wear.
- Standard vs. Excellent: The Leitz Excellent version impresses with a scoring geometry for tear-free drilling in coated boards and visible surfaces – ideal for the furniture industry.
- Shank: Make sure you choose the correct shank diameter and clamping length for your machine (e.g. 10×20 mm or 10×24 mm).
Frequently asked questions about through-hole drill bits
What is the difference between a through-hole drill bit and a dowel drill bit? A dowel drill bit creates blind holes – that is, bores that do not go through the entire workpiece. A through-hole drill bit, by contrast, drills right through the material. It is used when a complete through-opening is required, e.g. for screw connections, cable routing or hardware bores.
Which diameters are standard for through-hole drilling? In furniture and woodworking, 5 mm and 10 mm are the most common diameters. 5 mm drill bits are used for connector bores and fine through-holes, while 10 mm drill bits are used for larger fittings and screw connections.
Why is the rotation direction important with a through-hole drill bit? The rotation direction must match the machine spindle. A right-hand rotation drill bit belongs in the left spindle, a left-hand rotation drill bit in the right spindle. If these are reversed, tear-out occurs at the drilling edge and the drill bit wears much more quickly.
Which materials are through-hole drill bits suitable for? The drill bits in our range are suitable for solid wood, chipboard, MDF, HDF, as well as coated and veneered board materials. For coated surfaces where a visible finish is required, we recommend the Leitz Excellent version with scoring cutter geometry.
Do the drill bits fit my Homag / Weeke / Biesse / SCM? Yes – our range covers the main machine manufacturers: Homag, Weeke, Biesse, AES, SCM/Morbidelli, Felder, IMA and Masterwood. If you are unsure, we can help by phone or via the contact form.
