What is a return conveyor system?
A return conveyor system has the main task of transporting the machined workpiece. A distinction can be made between returning it to the operator and conveying it outbound to a material store. It serves as an addition to the processing machine (usually an edge banding machine) and therefore closes the material flow. Return conveyor systems are usually used with machines where the workpiece is machined across or along its length.
The structure of a return conveyor system is basically the same, whether it is an edge banding machine, a sanding machine or similar. First, at the end of each processing machine there is an outfeed. This usually consists of a roller conveyor or a conveyor belt. For larger workpieces, a vacuum gripping system is usually used to transport the machined workpiece onto the subsequent return conveyor belt. The outfeed is followed by a transfer conveyor, which depending on the application consists of a roller conveyor, a chain conveyor or a conveyor belt. Sensors and pushers can also be integrated here to direct the workpieces onto various further conveyor belts.
In modern processing operations, gripping-arm robots are also used, enabling pallet stacking and the individual handling of each workpiece.
Advantages of return conveyors
1. One-person operation:
- By using return conveyors, staffing requirements can be reduced. The automatic return of the workpieces means that no additional person needs to stand behind the processing machine; instead, the operator alone can feed the workpieces fully into the machine and stack them again.
2. Increase in productivity:
- The material flow is not interrupted by the automatic return, which increases productivity and throughput. In addition, the continuous flow makes it possible to determine an exact cycle time.
3. Cost minimisation:
- By using fewer staff and increasing productivity, cost minimisation is achieved over the longer term. The additional purchase costs usually pay for themselves after a short time and at the same time enable a higher output.
